Social Media Tax Scams

Beware of Tax Scams

Be on the lookout for tax scams.

Although they may sound legitimate, proceed with caution and
seek professional advice.

Here is a list of some of the scams:

  • Bad social media advice: Remember, just because it is on the internet does not make it accurate.
  • IRS Individual Online Account “help” from scammers. Only work with reputable tax advisors.
  • Fake charities. When there is a natural disaster, fake charities raise their ugly heads. Only make charitable contributions to reputable and known charities.
  • Bogus self-employment tax credits. There are no credits for the self-employment taxes.
  • Misleading offers in compromise. I work in the tax resolution industry and know of many companies that provide misleading advice to taxpayers. Be cautious of ads with 800-numbers. The best practitioners to work with are those in your local area that have a great reputation.
